How to choose the right pillow

Have you ever thought about how choosing the right pillow affects the quality of your sleep? Or more specifically, how the type of pillow you need is, amongst other things, determined by the position you usually sleep in?
I have to be honest and admit that until a couple of years ago pillows weren’t something I’d ever really given much consideration to. I’d wash them occasionally and replace them every few years but never really thought about whether or not I was sleeping on the right type of pillow.
It’s something I’ve done a fair bit of research into recently though, as I’ve worked with a few different bedding brands and been able to try out lots of different options. And it turns out that the level of support you need if you sleep on your side is quite different from the support you need if you tend to sleep mainly on your front or back.
Shopping for a new pillow can be overwhelming. There are so many different options to choose from.
How do you tell if a pillow is good for you?
In this post I’ll cover the different types that are available and my thoughts on some of the ones that I’ve tried. I’ll also share some tips on how to care for your pillows and keep them in good condition.
So if you’re looking for a new set of pillows, read on!

How do I know which pillow is right for me?
When it comes to choosing the right pillow, there are a few things you need to take into account.
The first thing is whether you’re looking for a supportive or plush pillow.
The second is the material.
And the third is the size.
You also need to decide how much you’re willing to spend on a pillow. Pillows range in price from around £20 to over £100. It’s important to find a pillow that’s comfortable and will last, so invest in the best you can afford.
how to find a pillow to suit your sleeping position
Do you sleep on your side, your back or your front?
If you sleep on your back then you’ll need a pillow that absorbs the weight of your head. The White Company recommend this medium memory microfibre pillow. Front sleepers typically require less support so a soft support pillow like this one is ideal.
Which pillows are best for side sleepers
If you’re a side sleeper you’ll probably need a firm, supportive pillow to align your neck and spine like this deluxe side support pillow. It offers a good level of comfort and support and its boxed construction means that it fills the pillowcase out really nicely, so your pillows look plumply inviting.

Which pillow material should i choose?
Once you’ve determined the type of pillow you need, it’s time to consider the material. Pillows can be made from a variety of materials, including down, feathers, latex and memory foam. For sheer luxury there’s nothing like the soft, inviting feeling of down but it may not be the best option if you are prone to allergies, or if you need a pillow that provides a firmer level of support. Latex and memory foam are firm and offer good support, but they can be quite hot to sleep on.
This non-allergenic Smartdown pillow made of recycled polyester is designed to mimic the feel of natural down.
For a firmer level of support try a shape contouring memory foam pillow like the TEMPUR Comfort Pillow Cloud (highly recommended by Mr P). These adapt and mould to the shape of your head, providing firm support with added comfort.
Alternatively if you love the feel of down, but need something with a little more support, try this Hungarian Goose Down Support Pillow.

non-allergenic options
Pillows can harbour dust mites (and lots of other nasty things), particularly if they are not washed and replaced regularly, so if you are prone to allergies or sinus problems, or if find yourself waking up feeling wheezy, then you may find that a non allergenic polyester or memory foam pillow helps to alleviate your symptoms.

Different pillow sizes
Pillows typically come in standard (50cm x 75cm) or king size (50cm x 90cm) options. Bolster pillows or square options are also available from some suppliers, as well as v-shaped pillows for back support.

How to wash your pillows
When laundering your bed linen don’t forget about the pillows. Most pillows can be washed in your washing machine (take care not to overload it) though professional laundering may be advised in some cases. Wash them every few months and use a pillow protector under your pillowcase to keep them looking clean and new.
How often should you replace your pillows
Most people probably underestimate how often they should change their pillows. The level of support your pillows offer will deteriorate over time. They will also absorb dirt, oil and dead skin cells making them a breeding ground for dust mites, so it’s a good idea to think about replacing them every couple of years.

I hope you’ve found these tips useful. Just remember to take your time, try out a few different options, and find the one that’s right for you. Happy pillow shopping!
